Tree planting
I planted grass in the yard. It’s going to take a few months before they grow to cover the whole surface. Got some trees from the Department of Agriculture to plant in the compound. They sell the saplings for RM1.00 each. I suppose that it is to encourage the public to plant trees. Planted mango, ciku, jambu, soursop and limau purut in the backyard. I’m looking for a longan tree. Check back in a few years’ time, and maybe I’ll have the photos of the fruits, haha!

Mango tree

BTW, are there any gardening gurus out there? I wonder what tree this is. Is it a good tree to grow on the sidewalk?

It is very interesting to have fruits tree planted at home. We used to have mango tree back home. But after waiting for 5 years, it don’t seems bear fruit. The tree later got chopped off. Only pamelo and rambutan trees still around. Get very excited in harvesting time.
Yes, i’m looking forward to harvest time already.. haha. Still too early. Sad story about the mango tree. Life goes on, i guess.
err….ur tanah..isn’t it a bit too pasir?…i dunno abt u la..for me..a lot of trees means a lof of mostiko…n the fruits..aiya..will attract bees n birds ..n they will shit on ur car when u park under the trees..
but then..kalau ade buah oredi..i dun mind kambing to ur hse to taste them…kekkekke…
eve, the pasir is for the grass to grow. under the pasir is top soil. the trees are planted in compost and top soil only. i don’t have anymore pasir to cover the top soil.
moskitos ah? i want that natural kind of environment mah… so have to enjoy all of the natural effects lah. Haha. When got buah oredi, come lah.
Wow. You are hardworking.
For me to dig so many holes…. it will take years…
I don’t know what’s the name of the tree but I have seen quite a number of it outside other people’s home (including my mum’s but she chopped it down because some idiotic sinseh told her the tree blocked good feng shui). It doesn’t grow too tall and give a nice shade. Only problem is….a lot of kerengga. I don’t know why. Me? I planted a mango tree outside my house (it’s so scrawny, I doubt I will see any fruits for at least 2 decades). And ya, I also had a papaya tree, which my mum also pulled out. Apparently my feng shui is also her concern. Sheesh.
I’m no expert but I think growing a mango tree in a narrow backyard is not too good an idea as they grow pretty tall and the roots extend can grow very long as well. Eg my neighbour has a mango tree and one root actually grew across the width of my garden, cracking up my drain and driveway! Only discovered the “root cause” when we tiled up our garden (got tired of all those weeds). Anyway all the best in looking after your carpet grass - it needs a lot of weeding!
yenjai, if i tried digging them, it would’ve taken years too… the men who dug up a layer of tanah liat from my garden dug up the holes for me. haha
jimbo, thanks for the input. i hear it gives good shade too but they also say the roots are too big and may break the drain.
DOBBS, thanks for dropping by. mango roots grow wild? ok… i’d better check with the Jabatan Pertanian ppl how much space it needs.
yes, the grass needs weeding and watering. i’m new to planting anything at all, so it’s going to be a learning experience,
Since the fruit trees will take a while to grow, how about planting some vegetables? I get so excited when my mom sent me to pull out a big fat ginger from the garden pot!
Ya, same thing happening w us. my neighbour’s mango tree’s root grow over our garden. my mom was very upset cos all her crops and flower looked so pathetic. the mango gasak all my mom’s fertilizer
I remembered she did mention the roots broke thru somthing (cant remember what) but thank God, the drain is still intact
Bernard, hope that ur mango tree wont bully ur other trees.
hoiling, i’ve planted pandan already. got some curry leaf plants and limau purut. i’m waiting to see what other things vege i can plant… maybe eggplant, or chili.
CSH, hahaha… dunno lah. have to ask the pertanian ppl what type of mango this is.
Bernard, ahhh. At least I won’t be so guilty should my wife stumble accross your pix (pretty unlikely. She doesn’t surf).
Pandan is great. I have plenty in my garden. Doesn’t need much attention.
yenjai, your guilt is nothing but your own. doesn’t matter what your wife says or thinks.
Chiiiim, leh? oklah, she won’t nag you about it lah…
mangoes alot of kerengga (big red) ants. But they also serve one purpose of protecting the tree against other pests like caterpillars.
fruit trees will attract alot of bats at night.
Way to go! for a green earth!
If got space, could consider planting some rainforest trees, like the pulai. A durian tree is also good.
Bernard says, “Fuyoh! Got sapce but not that much space. Thanks for the info. So, the kerengga have got a role too :-)”
I miss lime tree at my hometown too..
These pics were taken when I last went back.

Bernard says, “Wow, you’ve got BIG lemons, err limes. (Is there such a word as “limes”? *scratch my head*).”
Hope I’m not too late but if you decided to plant any fruit trees in the yard, bear in mind you’ll have problems of ants and termites in the future…for my house, the must have is aloe vera, a subs to gel for soothing wounds (I know you won’t need it *grins*), pandan, lemon grass, lemon (in pots), limau kasturi (in pots), cili (in pots), you’ll found them usefull in times of cooking and it’s much more easier to take care and control the size if you plant them in pots….plus some decorative plants like ferns…walla…your house is perfect…
Hello chelsea, welcome. Thanks for the suggestions. You’re the second person to suggest aloe vera to me.
