Carbuncle

I’m sure most people are aware what an ABSCESS is. It’s a collection of PUS in a space bounded by inflammatory tissue. The treatment is simple: the principle is, if there’s pus… drain it.

However, many people have not heard of a CARBUNCLE. A carbuncle is another type of soft tissue infection containing pus in the tissue space characteristically with inflammation in the surrounding tissue and numerous exit points for the pus. The most common site of a carbuncle is the back of the neck. This one is in the axilla (armpit). The patient is diabetic and the blood glucose control was very poor, probably due to the presence of infection.

Pus draining out from a carbuncle which had partially broken down.

After saucerization.

Saucerization is the procedure of resecting all the pus, sinuses (the spaces containing the pus) and surrounding infected tissue until healthy, clean tissue is found. The wound is left open and dressed until healing occurs.

You might be surprised, and wonder, “Will such a big wound heal?” Yes! It will. The process is called “healing by secondary intention”. The body has a mechanism by which the space is filled by tissue, called “granulation tissue”. Once the space is bridged by the granulation tissue, skin tissue grows from the edges and covers the exposed granulation tissue.

Aiyoh….mahu pengsan already. Luckily I had my lunch like 3 hours ago! My legs feel like jelly now!

I think if I want to go on a diet I will have to visit here more often. :)

The poor patient must be in pain from the saucerization (sounds like a saucer is coming) and uncomfortable while waiting for the wound to heal which may take months(????).

Another favourite pus congregation area, The toe, esp when it’s an ingrowing toe nail! I am having endless trouble with my son’s ingrowing toe nail problem.

Jaclyn, don’t worry.. carbuncles are not caused by cheese or red meat.

jonzz, you haven’t seen the really big holes yet.

Palmdoc, yup those work quite well. I’m just using saline dressing cos it’s quite clean.

LM, miracles DO happen, eh? :-)

hoiling, I would expect about 3 to 4 weeks.

Judy, right.. “saucerization” does come from the word saucer.. the idea is to cut out a the infected tissue like a saucer.

    LB, red!!

Liling, sometimes the toe-nail has to go. It’ll re-grow.

There is a recipe out there to pull that infection out:
Some smart weed- you can buy at herb stores
Make a strong tea-strain: add rye flour to make a paste. Put on a cloth & put on your sore or wherever you have infection. Works for any infection on the outside of your body.
Put on as hot as you can stand. For my childern
I put it on over night & then change it until it’s good.
Testmony: one of the childern had a splinder
in their foot & it was deep. Put this on over night. It was out the next morning.
    Home Remedy

For ingrown toenail-I take a knife and
scratch right on the top of my toe in the
middle. Start at the bottom where your nail starts to grow & go to the top & sratch just along the middle. If you do that it will have to grow together where you scratch it. That will bring up the side of your toenail & keep it from growing into your flesh.
